BJJ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Our school is proud to represent Will-Machado BJJ in Launceston, Tasmania. BJJ is a martial art that places emphasis on grappling and fighting on the ground. The techniques consist of takedowns, positional dominance and submissions, particularly joint locks and chokes.

BJJ developed in Brazil from traditional Jiu Jitsu – the ancient art of unarmed combat that evolved in Japan. During the 20th century it was refined in the fighting arenas of Brazil, primarily by the Gracie and Machado families, into the effective modern style we see today.

The art has evolved to a highly technical, structured system which uses actual wrestling training to simulate ‘real world’ fight scenarios. BJJ forms an integral part of a complete self defence program, and also provides opportunities for competition.

A high level of fitness and conditioning are a natural outcome of regular training, as are increased confidence, improved problem solving abilities and advanced analytical skills. Our advanced students and instructors have experience in a variety of complimentary martial art systems, which enhances their knowledge of realistic self-defence application.

Our BJJ classes are proudly affiliated with Will–Machado BJJ Australia, the Australian arm of the international Machado Jiu Jitsu organization. Mr John B. Will is the head instructor of BJJ Australia, and was the first Australian BJJ Black Belt. He is in regular contact with his club instructors in Launceston and makes regular seminar trips to Tasmania.

Our local coaches regularly travel to the Geelong HQ for competition and intensive training, often also learning from international elite coaches. They have been students of BJJ and John Will for many years and have also been consistent competitors at national and international level.
