Welcome to Mu Do Kwan, we are a progressive martial arts school teaching quality martial arts technique with an emphasis on practicality. Our schools aim to teach the martial arts way of self-discipline, confidence, respect for others and good citizenship. This is achieved through the study of martial arts, which in turn also helps the student develop fitness and good self-defence skills. One of the martial arts taught at our full-time centre in Launceston, Tasmania is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). Our BJJ classes are proudly affiliated with Will–Machado BJJ Australia, the Australian arm of the international Machado Jiu Jitsu organization. Mr John B. Will is the head instructor of BJJ Australia, and was the first Australian BJJ Black Belt. He is in regular contact with his club instructors in Launceston and makes regular seminar trips to Launceston. Our local coaches regularly travel to the Geelong HQ for competition and intensive training, often also learning from international elite coaches. They have been students of BJJ and John Will for over 6 years each, and have also been consistent competitors at the National level. Mu Do Kwan BJJ provides an intensive cardio workout while developing core strength. It is an excellent means for developing high levels of fitness while learning self defence skill. Our BJJ members have access to regular State, National and even International BJJ tournaments. New members are always welcome, see our school details below to arrange a visit......

More about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.... Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that places major emphasis on grappling and fighting on the ground. BJJ techniques consist of takedowns, positional dominance and ‘finishes’, namely joint locks and chokes. It developed from traditional Jiu Jitsu – the ancient art of unarmed combat that evolved in pre-western India, China and Feudal Japan. During the 20th century the art was refined in the ‘No Rules’ fighting arenas of Brazil, primarily by the Gracie and Machado families, into its modern style. The art has evolved to a highly technical, structured system which places huge emphasis on ‘live’ and ‘real’ training to simulate ‘real world’ fight scenarios. BJJ forms an integral part of a complete self defence program, and also provides opportunities for competition. Fitness and conditioning are an unavoidable outcome of regular training, as are increased confidence, improved problem solving abilities and advanced analytical skills. Our advanced students and instructors have experience in a variety of complementary martial art systems, which enhances their knowledge of realistic self defence application.
