Welcome to Mu Do Kwan, we are a progressive martial arts school teaching traditional Korean Hapkido technique with an emphasis on practicality.  Our schools aim to teach the martial arts way of self-discipline, confidence, respect for others and good citizenship.  This is achieved through the study of martial arts, which in turn also helps the student develop fitness and good self-defence skills.

People begin to study martial arts for many reasons, some to get fit and relieve stress, others want to participate in sport or sparring but most expect to learn self defence skills.  You may be surprised to know that many martial arts schools, while teaching martial arts technique, do not teach their students how to use those skills in practical self defence.  Mu Do Kwan is different.  We teach traditional Hapkido techniques in a way that will enable the student to employ them under duress and against resistance.  Don't worry, seperate kid's classes are offered and are taught in complete safety.

Mu Do Kwan Hapkido is the perfect martial art for men, women & children of all ages.  It offers a balance of recreation, fitness, confidence building and self-defence skill.

Our schools are affiliated with the Gong Kwon Yusul Federation and hapkido dan certificates are issued by the Korea Hapkido Federation, both are based in South Korea.  All of our instructors have previously trained and competed in Korea.  New members are always welcome, see our school details below to arrange a visit......

More About Hapkido...

Hapkido is a technical art that does not rely on superior strength or power to overcome an opponent.  It relies on correct joint angles in locks, superior balance and the use of an attackers energy against him to defend oneself.  Therefore virtually anyone can learn Hapkido, regardless of age or gender.   Even those with physical injuries or other unique challenges can learn Hapkido.

While learning Hapkido the student acquires numerous skills.  These include a wide variety of kicks, punches, blocks and strikes.  As the student develops they will go on to learn tripping, throws, wrist & arm locks and holds.  At advanced levels the Hapkido students can also study weapons like sword, staff, fan, dan-bong (short stick), cane and belt.

More About Gong Kwon Yusul...

Gong Kwon Yusul is a comprehensive Korean martial art system developed by Master Kang Jun. Commencing his martial arts training from a very young age, Gongkwon Yusul is the end product of decades of research of many martial arts with the goal of creating a system that is dedicated to practical fighting skills. Gongkwon Yusul encompasses skills at all ranges, including punching, kicking, elbows, knees, throwing, takedowns and ground striking and grappling: all of which are intended to be applied in practical, free-flowing situations.

A distinct aspect of Gongkwon Yusul is that it combines the effective, practical technique application, often seen in sport focused “mixed martial arts”, whilst at the same time, it retains traditional martial art attributes, such as respect for others, personal development and combative (non-sporting) techniques. Possibly the most distinctive aspect of Gongkwon Yusul, and what has seemed to have captured so much international attention is its approach to contact sparring where takedown and groundwork techniques are truly integrated with stand-up fighting skills.

Gongkwon Yusul effectively acts as bridge to fill the gap between archaic traditional arts and modern mixed martial art styles. It is an art that combines the best of old and new methods of training, skills and techniques.
